05. JAPANESE POP CULTURE - INTRODUCED TO CR :

► Deeper interest in unique wonderful popular culture of new Japan started in the Czech republic (in fact still Czechoslovakia) probably among some people being able to watch "anime" (Japan-made animations) broadcasted especially by German TV stations (RTL,ZDF,...) in the border areas, possibly also via some satellite TV broadcasting (RTL, Cartoon Network, Polsat)... Through certain anime subgenres (especially sci-fi and erotic) some interest gradually broke into the communities of SF and fantasy devotees, and later was spread further by already established activities (conventions) of such groups.

【NOTE: Curiously (because of initially introduced subjects?), in the beginning, absolute majority of members of the whole local anime (etc.) community consisted of boys...
1990s anime (and manga /Japanese comic) experience (from various sources, incl. kind of pc games - e.g.: RPG "Final Fantasy") spread especially among university students in Prague and some other big cities (Ostrava, Brno), who laid down a basis for mutual cooperation on obtaining more information about the subject.
This new interest was gradually supported by spreading of the internet connection ... and encouraged e.g. by local (very rare!) telecasting of some Japanese animation series ...

【NOTE: before 1990s, there were broadcasted on the Czechoslovak public TV only a very very few Japanese actors films or television series - but with pretty favourable response: many spectators still remember series "Oogon no inu" (="the Golden dog", on CST in 1983 as "Goro bily pes") or "Gennosuke yonaoshi choo" (aka "Falco", on CST in 1986 as "Strazce noci") ... and of course, great impression left the works of already world-wide famous director KUROSAWA Akira, or e.g. "Gojira" sci-fi monster movies ("Kaijuu daisensoo", 1965 ="Godzilla - Utok z neznama"; "Uchuu daikaijuu Girara", 1967 ="X - Nestvura z vesmiru"; "Daikaijuu kuuchuusen - Gamera tai Gyaosu", 1967 ="Gamera kontra Gaos").
1991 anime "Uchuusen Sajitariusu" (="Dobrodruzi z vesmiru" ; Japan made, but foreign subject!) first introduced on Czechoslovak public TV channel 'OK3
1993 ► "Sakura" - 1st restaurant with Japanese cuisine (sushi included) was opened in Prague
1994 anime "Akira" (1988) released on VHS in the Czech republic (by Intersonic)
► "Praha Tamura" - 1st family restaurant was opened by native Japanese in Prague
1995 anime "Candy Candy" [kyandi kyandi] broadcasted by private TV 'Premiera' (=later TV 'Prima')
1997 anime "Akira" screened at sci-fi and fantasy fans convention "Avalcon" (in Chotebor town, June ; *later "Fantasy Festival")
1998 ► 1st specialized Japanese film festival "Japon.film@prague.cz" organized at Lucerna cinema (May 21-24, Prague) - with Japanese guests: Sundance Tokyo film festival director Mr.KAWANO Masao, film director Mr.SUO Masayuki and actress and songstress SATO Yasue [pic] {"Raku-chan" from movie "Baunsu KoGals"}

► Japanese film festival {later "Asian Film Seminar", yearly} organized at "Morava" cinema (town Veseli n/M) - part of "Days of Japanese Art"
► in addition to exchanging anime related information by means of limited "e-mail conferences", some pioneering personal websites about this subject appeared...
► certain kind of anime/manga presented very sporadically (lectures by amateur enthusiasts) to the public at sci-fi fans conventions: "Pragocon" (in Prague, high school 'Arabska'), "Raukon" (in Kolin)....
2000 ► "Gon" (by TANAKA Masashi), kind of Japanese comic released in the Czech republic
► some kind of anime, manga, etc. continued to be presented at sci-fi fans conventions: "PRAGOCON" (January, in Prague), "Opatcon" (March, in Broumov), "Bohemiacon" (August, Usti n/L), "Raukon" (October, in Kolin), "Dracon" (December, in Brno)....
► the first 'organized body' was formed: "CZECHO-SLOVAK CLUB OF FRIENDS OF MANGA AND ANIME" (="Manga club") as a part of sci-fi club "Terminus" (joined in the Czechoslovak fandom) ... soon started own (amateur, fan) promotional activity, e.g. participating (by lectures and screenings) on sci-fi conventions (e.g. "Pragocon")...
► "Manga club" members in Prague started to have regular meetings - in "Club of technicians" (aka: "Lavka", thanks to Czech "MENZA" society) ...
(later some meetings were held in the special high school "Budanka" - thanks to "MENZA" ... and some in the befriended tearoom "Na ceste")
► the lecture (at "JICC Prague") about historical manga phenomenon given by Ms. KRAEMEROVA, professional expert on Japan from "Naprstek museum", helped manga-interested people to make contact (by coincidence via the 1st Czechoslovak student at Urasenke school of tea) with Embassy of Japan and "CZECH-JAPAN ASSOCIATION" ... and much later to establish its special section of "non-traditional (new) culture of Japan".
► in 2000 November "Manga club" members welcomed the very first Japanese manga artist in the Czech republic: Ms. ISHIJIMA Yumiko on friendly meeting at "Lavka" [pic])
2001 ► Nucleus of freshly formed "Manga club" (later "Mangaichi") built the first Japan popculture related community website at www.manga.cz, with manga and anime reviews, gradually enriched with discussion forums... and location map of 'otaku', where interested Czech people could register
(with passing years - over 500 registered people ; but homepage surveys participants number sometimes exceeds 600 and number of website visitors achieved 2.000 per day ; the age range of people interested is from 10 to 40, but with a peak (ca 50%) around 20 years old) ...
► "Pragocon" (#5) with anime/manga block by "Manga club" members (supported by Ms. Kraemerova from "Naprstek museum")
anime/manga presented for the 1st time at "Parcon" - the oldest Czech SF convention (sc.1982)
2002 ► "Pragocon" (#6: Feb.16.-17.) +anime/manga block (incl.lecture on Japanese popular music - by the 1st Czechoslovak student at Urasenke school of tea [pic])
► started activity out of Prague Capital: first meetings of 'otaku' in BRNO City and later in OSTRAVA ...
2003 ► more powerful ADSL internet connection was introduced into Czech (enabling downloads of big amount of data) and knowledge about anime/manga and other popular culture of the new Japan was spread further ...
► Czech public TV (Channel CT1) broadcasted anime-movie "Mononoke hime" (="Princezna Mononoke") on Friday in prime time!
Anime-movie "Spirited away" (="Cesta do fantazie") was shortly presented in some Czech cinema halls (and released on DVD 2003/2004 ; plus in 2006 broadcasted by Czech public TV) ...
► 1st meeting of fans of modern Japanese culture in Prague (Nov.22.-23.: high school 'Na Budance') held by "Mangaichi" circle (+CJS)
2004 ► "Pragocon" (#8) +anime/manga block with special guest: core of music unit "PAPAYA PARANOIA" - ISHIJIMA Yumiko & MORINAGA Michiko (via the 1st Czechoslovak student at Urasenke school of tea), Ms.Ishijima gave a manga drawing lecture
► (2004 May 8.-9.) brought the first Czech 'stand-alone' anime & manga festival "AnimeFest" in Brno city (risen from local amateur anime translators group), incl. lectures, screenings, workshops,... (became annual)
► "Japa" - shop with Japanese foodstuffs and other goods (manga & video rental incl.) opened in Prague
► (2004 Nov.6-7.) 1st "AkiCon" (convention) organized by "Mangaichi" enthusiasts (supported by CJA) held in Prague (became annual)
2005 ► some professional organizations (cinemas, theatres, TVs, publishers: magazines, newspapers...) draw their attention to anime phenomenon ... and some subjects started to seek the way of legal (commercial) spread among public
► PRO-AERO Civic Association (Cinema AERO) organized in 2005 "Asia film festival" (anime included), under auspices of the Embassy of Japan and supported by the Japan Foundation ...
► the first in Czechia regular broadcasting of anime channel ("A+" with Czech subtitles, by Minimax company based in Hungary) on cable TV (UPC service ; available to more than 300.000 Czech households)
...it was replaced in July 2007 by "Animax" channel (Sony Pictures Television International) - with highly watched series: Bleach, Death Note, Digimon, Fullmetal Alchemist, Inuyasha, Yu Yu Hakusho, Naruto, ... (www.animaxtv.cz)
2006 ► started new generation of special events - gatherings of Japanese pop culture enthusiasts {e.g. in Prague, August: "Anime Dance Weekend" =later: "Advik"}, gradually growing stronger and legalized . . .
► 1st real Japanese karaoke 'boxes' (private karaoke rooms in "Samurai" restaurant) was opened in Prague
► start of boom of restaurants offering Japanese cuisine (sushi especially) - over 20 in Prague...

► Thanks to growing interest in anime (plus related kinds of games) among a part of younger generation (till c.2005 it spread mostly non-professionally), also some other fields of Japanese culture gradually found the way to its Czech admirers - as e.g. another form of actors films, so-called "dorama" {Japanese TV dramatic production, series especialy} and "Jpop" (JAPANESE POPULAR MUSIC) - namely in the form of various anime-songu (songs used in animated TV series or films). Nevertheless, compared with anime phenomenon itself, which already somewhat spread into the public - music of new Japan unfortunately still remained almost unknown among the Czech audience at the dawn of 21th century...

【NOTE: Although already in 1979 there have been in Czechoslovakia successful hit "Bila vrana" (sung by Czech singer Zima), local cover of worldwide recognized Japanese top hit song "Ue wo muite arukoo" (aka "Sukiyaki"; 1961, by SAKAMOTO Kyuu), Japanese origin of this cover song remained virtually unknown to the Czech audience - as well as other (later) internationally known Japanese musicians (e.g. bands "SHONEN KNIFE", or "YELLOW MAGIC ORCHESTRA", etc.) were noticed by a few specialists only.
